2014 Favs: Our Couples

We were blessed with so many amazing couples in 2014. It was a serious reminder of how lucky we were to make a living photographing weddings and the celebrations that follow!

As photographers, we’re so lucky to work with laid-back, fun-loving clients. More and more with weddings, we see stressed out brides-to-be focused on the details of a wedding day. From the pressures of the million-dollar pinterest boards to faux wedding blog features … we work in an industry that constantly has engaged couples guessing whether their wedding is going to be “good enough”. But when we sit back and look at our favorite work from a 12-month span, NOTHING is more important or heartfelt than the portraits you see between a bride and groom on their wedding day. Strip away the gorgeous details, delicious food, and amazing party band … and you still have a happy couple madly in love, on the biggest day of their lives … and that’s plenty “good enough” for us.

So with that, we say a big “thank you” to all of our 2014 couples who put their faith in us, and invited us to document so many wonderfully intimate moments throughout the year! Here’s a look back at some of our favorite portraits ….

We couldn’t have asked for a more kind-hearted, relaxed couple to photograph for our first wedding of 2015. Despite an utter downpour of rain for the majority of their wedding day, you would have thought it was 70 and sunny outside from Melissa and Latham’s smiles. They were so patient with us as we called some audibles and had to move shooting locations at the last minute because of the rain. Their ceremony was held at the gorgeous St. Elias Maronite Church here in Birmingham, just like Melissa’s brother Harrison’s wedding back in 2013. The newlyweds selected the newly-minted Florentine Building for their reception, and it was the perfect choice for a night of dancing and laughter! The Fountain City Players provided the night’s entertainment, and the beautiful florals were created by Vince Gray. So with that, we kick off 2015 and show of some of our favorites from Melissa and Latham’s gorgeous evening …

I can’t believe that little miss Nora is already a year old! It was just last week we were photographing some newborn portraits, wasn’t it? We always feel privileged when Jessica and Adam ask us to photograph their family … with the added pressure that Jessica is a crazy-talented photographer in her own right keeping us on our toes! Here’s a few favorites from this wonderful family …

Anna Laura & David

We had a wonderful day with Anna Laura and David this past Saturday, photographing their nuptials at Reid Chapel at Samford University! It was a relatively mild day weather-wise, which allowed us a few minutes of time outside on campus without folks freezing to death. After the ceremony, we headed to downtown Birmingham and B&A Warehouse for a gorgeous reception of dinner and dancing. The bride and groom’s cakes, courtesy of Barb’s Cakes, were a huge hit … reflecting David’s football days at Samford and Anna Laura’s “itsy bitsy” little pageant victory. ;-) The music for the evening was provided by Blue Denim, and Ashley from I Do, I Do helped make sure the day went off without a hitch. Here’s a few favorites from Anna Laura and David’s big day …

Rachel & Jay

I knew we were going to have a amazing day of shooting Saturday the moment I sat down with Rachel and Jay back during their initial consult. Rachel had been in front of our camera before at her sister Lindsey’s wedding back in 2012 … and we couldn’t have been happier that she asked Stacey and I to document her day as well. Jay and I hit it off immediately, with our mutual support for the Michigan Wolverines and love of photography. The newlyweds said their vows at Rachel’s home church, Concord Baptist, in Crossville, Ala. Then it was off to their tented reception on a gorgeous fall evening. As she did for Lindsey’s wedding, the talented Brooke Kearbey from BKwed took care of the coordination and florals for Rachel and Jay’s nuptials … and everything looked amazing! As the newly minted Sowers head to North Carlolina for some honeymooning, we wanted to share a few favorites from their day …

We can’t wait for Allison and Trace’s wedding in a few months at the stunning Shoal Creek. But in the meantime, I had a great time going down to their lakehouse for some engagement portraits! Here’s a few favorites from their session …

We couldn’t have asked for a better couple to meet for the first time AND photograph on their wedding day. Regan and Charles were so into each other, we pretty much just stood back and let their chemistry run the portrait portion of the day! They said their vows at the beautiful Brookwood Baptist Church, and then danced the night away with their guests at the Country Club of Birmingham. The best part of the day? Having the Louise from Mariee Ami make the day go seamlessly (as usual). Here’s a few favs from Regan and Charles’ nuptials …

Every time we go to Auburn for a wedding, we know we’re in for a good time. Paige and Preston were such a wonderful couple to document on their wedding day … and we’re so grateful for the time they gave us! We cant’ help mentioning that it was looking like a 1000% chance of rain for their big day … but we were so blessed to dodge to big storms by a few miles … and even enjoyed a clear night for dinner and dancing! The newlyweds celebrated their vows and hosted their guests at the GORGEOUS Water Oak Manor … and we couldn’t be happier with how the images turned out! Here’s a small sample …

It’s always fun when our couples choose locations for their sessions that have some special meaning to them. In Kathryn and Matt’s case … it was Matt’s gorgeous grandparents’ house in Birmingham, and Kathryn’s parents’ lake house just north of town. Both spots were picture-perfect, and made for a great backdrop for their engagements! Here’s a look at a few early favs!

Nicole & Brandon

It’s always a wonderful day when we get to travel south of Birmingham to the Lake Martin area for a wedding! This past Saturday was no different, with Nicole and Brandon’s gorgeous nuptials at Springhouse at Russell Crossroads. It’s always a fun day when we get to work alongside some of the best wedding vendors in Birmingham … and this past weekend was definitely an all-star cast. Candice with M. Elizabeth Events handled the planning and direction … and the beautiful floral arrangements were put together by the talented folks at HotHouse Design Studio. Candace and Brandon opted for sailcloth tents for both their ceremony and dance floor at the reception … and these were by far the most photogenic tents you’ll find! Despite some threatening weather in the area, the rain held off long enough for a wonderful ceremony … some picture-perfect light for portraits with the couple … and all the first dances and toasts. We’re so grateful to Brandon and Nicole for asking us to be part of the big day, as well as everyone who brought together such a beautiful event for us to photograph! Here’s a “few” favs from the big day!

Rachel & Isaac

One of the wonderful parts about working as a photographer is having the occasional opportunity to document moments in my own family. Admittedly, we’ve been a little focused on a certain little lady in the family … but this past weekend it was Isaac and Rachel’s turn.

I still hold a grudge deep down inside against my little brother, who knocked me out of the prized “baby of the family” spot a couple of decades ago. He’s been enjoying the good life ever since … and I’ve disappeared into the abyss known as the “middle child zone.”

But all sibling rivalry aside … we couldn’t be happier to spend the past week celebrating his marriage to a much better half in Rachel. How us three Gresham boys got so lucky with our choice of spouses still befuddles our friends, relatives, and yes … even our parents. We couldn’t have been more excited to welcome Rachel into the chaos that is “The Greshams” … and hope she brought her ear plugs and helmet along for the ride.

The newlyweds said their vows at a gorgeous mountain spot in Colorado Springs … The Lodge at Cathedral Pines. The wedding was typical Isaac and Rachel … simple and heartfelt, with breakfast for dinner and light-up foam noodles. The amount of work that all of their family and friends put into the weekend to make it picture-perfect was astounding … and there was no one who worked harder or invested more time than my dear mom. She would make an amazing wedding planner in this industry. But after many months of slowly saying goodbye to her baby thru addressing invites and making flower arrangements, I’m pretty sure she’d all wedding-d out.

But all the ramblings of an older, grouchier sibling aside … we’re so happy, proud, and excited for these two lovebirds! So while they keep spamming my phone with videos from Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney Land … I present you with some favs from Isaac and Rachel’s big day …

Jamie & Freddie

It was another wonderful day at the Sonnet House (when is it not?) for Jamie and Freddie’s big day! It seems like forever since we’ve had a chance to shoot a ceremony on the fireplace porch, so were excited when the weather held and the newlyweds got to say their vows outside in front of family and friends! Then it was off to dinner and dancing … and the most delicious pies from Edgar’s! Here’s a few favs from their big day!

It’s been almost 7 years since we photographed Lisa and Hugh on their wedding day … and we were so honored that they asked us to photograph an expecting Lisa with their first little one! It was such a pretty evening at Railroad Park, and the sunset gave us perfect light for some pretty portraits of mommy and daddy-to-be!

Rocco

It’s hard to believe that five years have come and gone since Jennifer and Justin’s picture-perfect wedding day. To this day, we refer back to their wedding as one of our favorites to document. So when this beautiful couple contacted us about taking some portraits of their six month old son Rocco, we couldn’t wait to get started! We photographed the little man and his parents at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and despite some wonderful Alabama heat … came away with some great portraits of a pretty darn photogenic family!

Lauren & Chad

Lauren and Chad’s engagement session was more of a hybrid family session, with their adorable little man “B” making an appearance on camera from time-to-time! We shot in downtown Northport, and after waiting out a thunderstorm… finished the evening off along the river walk in Tuscaloosa. We can’t wait to head back to T-Town for their nuptials next month along the river!

Amanda & Scott

Amanda and Scott were to perfect couple to take on some not-so-comfortable weather this past Saturday for their “I Do’s” at Samford University. With a heat index well over 100 and a couple of rain showers coming thru … it would have been totally understandable if they had been a little stressed out. But from the moment they had their first look in Reid Chapel, you would have thought there wasn’t a cloud or raindrop to be found. They were so into each other during the portrait portion of the day, and so easy-going about dodging some raindrops … it made our job a breeze! After their vows were complete, they headed out Highway 280 to Inverness Country Club to celebrate with family and friends. We always love when our couples get to spend some time letting loose on the dance floor … and these two did NOT disappoint! Here’s a few favs from Scott and Amanda’s big day ….

Over the past 9 years we’ve had the chance to shoot wedding and portraits in some pretty awesome places. From California to New York, from Philadelphia to Mexico, we’ve been blessed with clients who weren’t afraid to bring us along for the ride! Out of all the places we’ve shot, one of our favorite cities to travel to for portraits and weddings is a mere 3-hour drive up I-65. Beautiful, vibrant and full of character … we’ve always held a special place in our hearts for Nashville. Anytime someone has asked us to shoot their engagements or wedding in Tennessee’s big city, we’re all-to-happy to hop in the car and head north!

All this to say, we’re so excited to announce an exciting new venture … a project that we’re simply calling Simple Color Nashville.

Just like our studio here in Birmingham, we’re now available for wedding and portraits in the greater Nashville area. And since we’ll be considering it our second studio location, there will, of course, be no travel fees associated with events and sessions we cover there! And for those of you who’ve asked … yes, Stacey and I will be shooting all the events there as well!

To celebrate our little “expansion”, we’re offering a limited time discount on wedding packages … as well as a free engagement session in the Nashville area when you book wedding coverage! During the discount period, our coverage for Nashville-based weddings will start at $2450. Our portrait sessions will start at $450, and the Colorbooth will be available starting at $650. (We’ll also be announcing a little something special over the next few months for our past wedding clients who call Nashville home, so stay tuned for that!)

For all the family and friends who’ve been wondering … no, I’m not packing up the two-year-old and six-month preggo momma and moving to Nashville. :-) We’re simply excited to have a fresh backdrop for photos and portraits that we haven’t gotten to use anywhere near enough over the past few years!

If you have any questions regarding our Nashville services and packages, don’t hesitate to call our studio at our Nashville number … 615.669.3608 … or via email at brandon[at]simple-color.com.

We’re so grateful for everyone who’s made this new adventure possible for us over the past nine years, and can’t wait for the newest chapter for our studio to get underway!

Ashley & Aaron

A little over a decade ago our friend Ashley stood at the altar next to my wife Stacey and I as we said our vows. This past weekend we were happy to be there for her and Aaron’s big day at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church. It was a tad warm outside (true to form for Alabama in the summer), but the newlyweds were more than patient with me … going outside and battling the heat for a few portraits! Here’s some favorites from their big day …
